Ravines Dry Riesling 2014: $18 Very Good+

After an atypically weak Riesling in 2013 (for Ravines, that is), this winery has bounced back with a fine 2014.  The Ravines Wine Cellars Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $18 [Very Good+] is a touch sweeter and less austere than in previous years.  Unusually, for Ravines, this is a wine that can be sipped.  With interesting flavors, exceptional balance, and very good length, the 2014 Ravines is very fine, especially with food.

Medium lemon in color, there are a few stray bubbles.  The nose includes aromas of smoke, gunflint, stones, lemon/lime, stone fruit and pear.  For Finger Lakes Riesling it is very meaty and smoky.  The interplay of smoky/stony notes and pear is very appealing.  Medium bodied, off-dry, with substantial acidity, this is a very well balanced wine.  Flavors of apple, grapefruit, stone fruit, pear, smoky/stony minerality and pine needles have substance and precision.  The finish is very well balanced and long.  It comes to a lip smacking conclusion.  Flavors linger.  October 2015
