Ravines “White Springs” Dry Riesling 2014: $23 Very Good+

The Ravines “White Springs Vineyard” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $23 [Very Good+] is a very distinctive and enjoyable wine, complex, but also extremely refreshing and easy to gulp.  With its sappy apple/quince flavors and limestone notes, it reminds me of Vouvray from the Loire.  This is a very flexible wine.  It can be served with food or sipped.  Raclette cheese was an especially good accompaniment.

Bright medium lemon in color, the nose is complex, with sappy green apple fruit, honey, lemon, steely/smoky notes, chalky soil and hazelnut. The Ravines is medium bodied, medium dry (the sweetest dry Riesling I have tasted from Ravines), soft, with tangy acidity.  Balance is good. Flavors of fresh apple, quince, lemon and citrus zest are accented by ferrous/chalky notes and hazelnut, and given a lift by an inner floral perfume. Concentration is very good and the wine has an appealing piquant tartness.  The interplay of fruit and mineral notes is very attractive. The finish is harmonious, with a nice acid tang and very good length.  Hazelnut and chalky mineral notes linger.  January 2016

Note: Ravines purchased the White Springs Vineyard in 2012.  Not far from Geneva, its soils have more limestone influence that most other vineyards in the region.
