Red Newt Dry Riesling 2014: $19.50 Very Good+

The Red Newt Cellars Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $19.50 [Very Good+] is a dry lemony-tart wine with prominent slatey mineral notes.  Streamlined, focused, and bursting with flavor, this wine will be appreciated especially by acid and “terroir” lovers.  With very good focus and high acidity, it is a natural with food.

Medium lemon in color, the aromas are tart and rapier-like, with scents of lemon oil, lime, white peach, and slate mineral notes.  Light to medium bodied, dry, with a round center and cutting acidity on the margins, balance is very good.  Flavors of grapefruit, white peach, lime, anise, and a good dollop of citrus zest bitterness are heavily accented by slate mineral notes.  The flavors are well concentrated with very nice focus.  The finish is balanced, lip-smacking, and quite long, concluding with a dash of spice.  October 2016
