Thirsty Owl Dry Riesling 2014: $13 Very Good

Do you love the rubber & petrol notes of aged Riesling?  Do you also hate to wait?  Well, the Thirsty Owl Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $13 [Very Good] is brand new, but has these oily scents in abundance.  But apart from the funky petrol notes, this wine has flavor, zip, and a fair amount of complexity too.  It is a very good value and can be sipped or served with food.

Pale lemon in color, the nose is initially full of pointed rubbery petrol notes, but these diminish somewhat with air.  Underneath the petrol are scents of lime, apple, pear, underripe pineapple and hints of chalky mineral and wax.  Medium bodied, off-dry to medium dry, the Thirsty Owl has chalky lip-clenching acidity.  Rubber, petrol and chalky mineral elements combine with apple, grapefruit and  fruit cocktail to produce a rather austere flavor impression, but the wine becomes richer and more friendly with extended aeration.  The finish is tart, slightly chalky and lip-smacking, with good length.  June 2015

Note:  This wine was better the second day, so give it some air before drinking.  It should age well.
