Wagner Dry Riesling 2014: $15 Good+ to Very Good

Back labels of wine bottles often feature hyperbole and fantastic tasting notes not comprehensible to ordinary mortals.  But the wording on this wine’s rear label pretty much hits the mark: “This elegant and versatile food wine melds nectarine and lime aromas with citrus and mineral flavors.” Yes, simple and to the point.  The Wagner Vineyards Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $15 [Good+ to Very Good] is a light-weight wine with good flavor and appealing balance.  It will work nicely with lighter foods.

Medium lemon in color, the nose is airy, tart and piercing, with aromas of lime, lemon, and apple.  Medium bodied, off-dry, with snappy acidity and a lightweight mouth feel, the Wagner is nicely balanced.  Flavors of apple, pear, lime, lemon, and chalky loam are not especially intense or complex, but have very good precision and clarity.  The finish is nicely poised, clean, with good length.   October 2015
