Barry Family Cellars “Tuller" Riesling 2014: $18 Fair

The Barry Family Cellars Riesling (Tuller Vineyard, Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 [Fair] is a flawed wine.  Wooly/sour notes in the aromas and flavors indicate that something went wrong during the vinification of this wine.  The label describes this Riesling as “finished off-dry” but that is not the case.  This wine is sweet.

Pale lemon in color, the nose is off-putting, with a dirty-wooly-sour note obscuring vague pear and lemon fruit.  Light bodied and sweet, with just enough acidity, the BFC has a flat and uninteresting mouth feel.  Cloying flavors of pear, apple, lemon and loamy earth are further degraded by the wooly/sour note.  The finishes manages to be simultaneously tart and cloying, with an abundance of “off” flavors.  July 2015
