Hector Wine Company Riesling 2014: $16 Very Good to Very Good+

The Hector Wine Company Riesling (Seneca Lake, NY) 2014 $16 [Very Good to Very Good+] is a medium-sweet wine, but not “tutti-frutti.” As a result, it seems much drier than it actually is.  Luscious aromas of honeycomb and pear make for a beguiling nose, and the flavors have a richness to match.  This wine is quite enjoyable to sip but could also be served with food.

Medium to dark lemon in color, aromas of honeycomb, butter, fig, pear and hints of asian spice are very attractive, with a subdued fruitiness. They seem to suggest a dessert made of baked pear, honey and puff pastry.  Medium bodied, sweet, with a light spritz, there is adequate acidity to keep this wine in balance.  Solid flavors of very ripe apple, pear, fruit cocktail, honeycomb, fig, and a touch of spice are enlived by a small touch of citrus. The finish is dry and spicy, almost Gewürztraminer-like, with very good length.  October 2015
