Hermann J. Wiemer Semi-Dry Riesling 2014: $18 Good

I’ve never liked the term “semi-dry,” since most of these wines are sweet — pure and simple.  There is nothing “dry” about them.  The Hermann J. Wiemer “Semi-Dry” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $17.50 [Good] is a very soft, low-key medium sweet Riesling.  Lacking any zippy acidity, it is best sipped, not served with food.

Bright dark lemon in color, the Wiemer has gentle low-key aromas of creamy peach, pear, honey, subtle smoky/earthy notes, and just a hint of lime.  Light bodied, medium sweet, with low acidity, balance is OK, on the soft side.  Caressing flavors of peach, pear, apple, honey, a touch of lime, and chalky/earthy notes have modest intensity.  The finish is even-keeled, gentle, but without much length.  November 2015
