Heron Hill “Reserve” Riesling 2014: $25 Very Good to Very Good+

The Heron Hill “Reserve” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $25 [Very Good to Very Good+] is a medium sweet Riesling with a good deal of fruit and prominent mineral accents.  Enjoyable now, it is somewhat reserved.  With a few years in the cellar, it may well blossom into something more special.

Medium lemon in color, the aromas are oily and rich, with scents of lime, ripe apple, white peach, citrus zest, honey and prominent earthy/mineral notes.  Medium bodied, medium sweet, with a good dash of tingly acidity, balance is very good.  Flavors of lime, ripe apple, pineapple, citrus zest, hints of honey, lots of spicy shale stone, and a jot of bitterness have nice intensity and focus.  The finish is spicy, earthy and restrained, ending on a moderately bitter note.  January 2017
