Shaw Vineyard “Road Block Reserve” Riesling 2014: $27 Very Good to Very Good+

The Shaw Vineyard “Road Block Reserve” Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 $27 [Very Good to Very Good+] is a restrained medium sweet Riesling that would be a fine addiiton to your cellar.  Unlike the 2012, which was drinking very nicely 2 1/2 years after the vintage, this bottle is more tightly wound, a bit reticent, and seems to need some additional time to mature.  It is likely to blossom with age.

Light lemon in color, cool aromas of grapefruit, lime, white peach, honey, pine, chalky mineral, and a steely note are quite attractive.  Light bodied, medium sweet, a bit chalky, with tangy acidity, the Road Block has a tight and restrained mouth feel that eases somewhat with air. Balance is very good.  Flavors of grapefruit, lime, peach, honey, citrus zest, anise, spice, earth and chalky mineral have very good focus and concentration, and a restrained power.  The finish turns drier and more spicy, with very good length.  January 2017
