Sheldrake Point Riesling Ice Wine 2014: $60 Excellent

The Sheldrake Point Winery Riesling Ice Wine (Finger Lakes, NY) 2014 375 ML $60 [Excellent] is quite a splurge, isn’t it?  But the wine delivers.  Very rich, honeyed, with playful acidity, this is a bottle to be savored, droplet by droplet.

Medium yellow gold in color, the nose is rich and pungent.  Aromas of honey, apricot, peach, citrus, citrus zest and hints of pine are complex and beguiling.  Low in alcohol (8.8%), the Sheldrake is very sweet (26% residual sugar) and somewhat viscous, with snappy acidity.  The flavors are very rich and toothsome, packed with honey, toffee, apricot, ripe peach, citrus, citrus zest and hints of wet stone.  The finish is tart, vibrant, and playful, with lots of citrus tang and hints of wet stone.  The finish is is quite long.  March 2015

Note: Like many very sweet wines, this was better after being open a day.  If possible, decant for several hours before enjoying.
