Hermann J. Wiemer “Josef” Riesling 2015: $39 Very Good

The Wiemer website declares that "power defines the single vineyard Josef Riesling,” but I don’t believe many tasters would agree.  The Hermann J. Wiemer “Josef Vineyard” Riesling (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) $39 [Very Good] is a polite, well-balanced wine, with pure & attractive fruit flavors of moderate intensity.  It is by no means powerful or dramatic, although it does keep well, and was noticeably richer after two days in the fridge.  With its low acidity, this wine seems lost with food — sipping is best.  This is expensive, given its quality.

Medium lemon yellow in color, the aromas feature a smoky mineral note on top, with scents of apple, sweet white peach, tropical fruit, and honey in the lower register.  Light bodied, sweet, with just enough acidity, balance is good.  Flavors of Tarte Tatin (buttery apples), canned peaches, honey, a touch of orange-y citrus, and a smoky minery note have moderate concentration, if not much verve.  The finish is balanced, somewhat spicy, with good length.  March 2017

Note: Decant this wine for several hours or overnight if possible.
