Buttonwood Grove Riesling 2016: $14 Good+

The Buttonwood Grove Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) $14 [Good+] is a sugary sweet Riesling with lime, apple and pear flavors and good concentration.  Some light bitter notes detract.  This wine won the 2017 New York Food and Wine Classic’s “Governor’s Cup.”

Medium straw in color, moderately intense aromas of very ripe grapes are a bit flat, not lively, showing diffuse scents of lime, lime zest, apple and pear.  Medium bodied, soft, sweet, with average acidity for Riesling and an open-knit mouth feel, balance is OK.  Sugary flavors of lime, apple, pear, apricot, a waxy note, and light bitterness have good concentration.  Flavors fall off in the sweet finish, which is lightly bitter, with good length.  Suggestions of overripe fruit linger.  November 2017
